Modern E-cooking appliances like the Electric Pressure Cooker (EPCs) are now available and provide time, cost, and convenience advantages over other cooking fuels like charcoal.
Over 95% of Ugandans depend on biomass wood for cooking fuel (charcoal and firewood) with only 4% of houses in urban areas using electricity for cooking. 74% of urban households have access to electricity.
What are the benefits of using the e-Sefuliya (Electric Pressure Cooker)?
Cheaper Cooking:
Electric Pressure Cookers save Over 60% on most foods compared to charcoal and other options (CREEC Lab Study).
Faster:
The e-Sefuliya takes half of the time required to cook most foods compared to other cooking options such as charcoal, firewood and
hotplates.
Convenience:
The e-Sefuliya automates the cooking process which frees up time for other productive activities. Also, less cleaning is required after cooking.
Safer:
The e-Sefuliya has adequate safety controls, reducing burns, cooking accidents thereby improving cooking safety.
Health benefits:
The e-Sefuliya reduces indoor air pollution exposure from charcoal & firewood. Four million people die every year worldwide from Indoor air pollution.
Variety:
The EPC can cook over 80% of the Ugandan meals. There are different EPC sizes for different family sizes and needs.
Environment:
E-cooking contributes to environmental protection by replacing charcoal or firewood as cooking fuel. Firewood and charcoal as cooking fuels are partly responsible for environmental degradation in Uganda.

Do’s : Check the rubber gaskets, valves, and seals to make sure they are in good working order and that there’s no food blocking them before cooking.
• Make sure you use enough liquid because too little liquid may cause food to burn or cause lack of pressure.
• Follow the instructions for keeping your cooker clean.
• Make sure you follow proper instructions for releasing pressure (natural release, quick release, or cold-water release).
• Follow a recipe if you aren’t sure of cooking times and how to release the pressure.
Don’ts:
Do not use too much oil in your cooker because it may damage it.
• Do not overfill your cooker. Make sure to follow the directions for how much food or liquid is safe to put in your cooker.
• Do not submerge your electric cooker in water.
• Do not expose your hands, face or other body parts to hot steam when releasing steam or opening the pot’s lid.
• Do not use a cooker that has worn out gaskets or valves.
• Do not use steel wire scrubbers or metal utensils on the inner pot as this will damage the non-stick interior.
Always unplug electric pressure cookers before cleaning them. Remove inserts and pot.
Remember that this has electronic components and should never be immersed in water. Spray your simple solution onto a damp cloth or sponge, and wipe the outside of the housing to pick up crumbs and remove stains. The wet cloth helps remove stains or dirt on the surface, the dry cloth helps remove the moisture.
Use a soft sponge to clean the inner pot to avoid destroying the non-stick interior
Do not place the base and the heating element of the cooker in water or in the dishwasher. Instead, these should be wiped down with a damp cloth.
The inner pot and the lid of most models are dishwasher safe (check your owner’s manual for specific cleaning recommendations)
The sealing ring (gasket) should be hand-washed in soapy water, dried completely, and then inspected for cracks or other damage before putting it back in the lid.
Check the steam release valve and the float valve to make sure nothing has clogged the pathways.
